The Dark Zenith

The Dark Zenith

Any civilization that is rich in culture, advanced in technology, and shining brighter than others starts progressing in leaps and bounds without any halt. It  progresses until it reaches its zenith. Once it climbs its zenith, laws of nature pull the civilization down to descend down the peak. Throughout history, the eternal journeys of all the lost civilizations has reached its peak and then vanished– namely Mohenjo-Daro Harappa, Egypt, the Incas, the Romans and the legendary continent of Atlantis with the magnificent civilization that lived on it, vanished mysteriously in the Atlantic Ocean.

Present day earth has already reached its Zenith in terms of progress. Civilization began when the first early man fought with his peer not by hurling a stone instead hurled an insult. Then he started farming, believed in religion, during Renaissance he questioned why and had a rebirth, waged wars, introduced politics, saw the Industrial Revolution, and plunged into Digital age today with the tidal wave called Internet splashing everyone into its stride. The same people who fought Nature to merely exist and had hunt to gather food, is fighting amongst each other claiming nations, calling themselves Superpowers and waging wars owing to political whims and fancies. Democracy, Dictatorship, Anarchy, Monarchy...it has seen it all.

Never before as in recent months, the sense of insecurity and decay pervaded the global society.  The economic collapse, the doubts about the globalized economy, the class conflicts, the religious wars, and to top it all the giant threat called Global Warming make our perception of time fragile and precarious. Global warming is taking a toll on the weather resulting in huge climate change. Suddenly it seems every summer is hotter than before and every winter the chilliest ever, bringing floods and calamities like Tsunami, the world is definitely moving towards a future – an unprecedented and unpredictable one. Familiar landscapes will soon look different, our city might feel different, you might have your neighbour’s house claimed by the sea, and predicting weather might not be possible anymore making the meteorological services futile.  A hill station might not remain a hill station, a popular beach spot may be part of the ocean, a snow capped Alps might be sunny and hot, and tropical countries might be cold and not sun kissed anymore, crops might get affected, animals are getting extinct by the day and food might be scarce, all leading to an end - an end of the present global civilization that once had “Superpowers” and fought over the “Mid- East”. Reminds one of T.S Eliot’s words,
And the wind shall say "Here were decent godless people;
Their only monument the asphalt road
And a thousand lost golf balls."
